A “Heritage Icon” of the Fine Wine World
First made in 1951, Penfolds Grange has risen to the top of the fine wine world to become one of the most famous labels there is. It is so revered in its home country that the South Australian National Trust has it listed as a Heritage Icon. A Barossa Shiraz that single-handedly put Australian wine on the map, it is an essential part of any complete collection.
The Best of the Best in Any Given Year
The Penfolds Grange is somewhat unique in its make-up. Designed to represent the epitome of Australian fine wine, it takes the flagship Shiraz grape (with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon) and shapes it to capture the nuances of each vintage. It is a multi-district blend crafted from the best parcels across South Australia in that year, meaning that each bottling is a masterpiece of consistent excellence.
One of the “Wines of the Century”
Fully reflecting the heights that Penfolds Grange can achieve and indeed the esteem in which it is held, the 1955 was named as one of the Wine Spectator’s “Wines of the Century” alongside such luminaries as 1945 Mouton-Rothschild, 1947 Cheval Blanc, 1955 Biondi Santi & 1961 Hermitage La Chapelle by Paul Jaboulet.
This is an incredible achievement, underlining the superb quality on show, and one that is backed up by the sentiments of wine critics and writers across the board:
“one of the only true First Growths of the Southern Hemisphere” – Hugh Johnson
“a leading candidate for the richest, most concentrated wine on planet Earth” – Robert Parker
Like First Growth Bordeaux, Grand Cru Burgundy and Vintage Champagne, Penfolds Grange is an essential for any fine wine cellar.
