Last month we opened the doors of our office in Hong Kong to our clients for a series of wine tastings. The idea was simple – showcase a broad range of wines, which encapsulate exactly what FINE+RARE does best. These informal, intimate Friday afternoon tastings allow our clients to taste the wines at their leisure whilst also having the opportunity to have a chat with us here in Hong Kong face to face.
We kicked off at the start of July with two reds which could not have been more contrasting in style – a 1986 Chambertin Grand Cru by Domaine Trapet alongside a 2006 Petrolo by Galatrona. As you might expect, two decades was just the beginning when analysing the differences between these two wines. The Petrolo was everything you might expect from a Super Tuscan – brooding, masculine and arguably still with its best years ahead of it; the 1986 Chambertin on the other hand, was a perfect embodiment of the old adage ‘there are no good wines, only good bottles’. Indeed, this was in superb condition and belied the mixed reviews of the vintage – the wine itself was delicate but still with plenty of red fruit; it showed beautifully.
Midway through the month we carried on the Burgundy theme with a couple of gems our buyers in London had unearthed – two superb efforts from the ever reliable Jadot stable: the 2006 Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes 1er Cru and the 2008 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru. Whilst the Grands Echezeaux did exactly what you would expect of top quality wine making from such a hallowed site, the 2006 Les Chaumes stole the show. The vineyard itself is tucked in next door to the legendary ‘La Tache’ vineyard – as the layers of red and black fruit, spice, saddle leather and smoke attest, it has a fair bit in common with its neighbour beside the postcode. That this was all available for under GBP 300.00 in bond per 6 bottles is a further testament to the hard work our buyers put into finding amazing, under-the-radar parcels of wines for us to offer to our customers.
We finished off our inaugural series of tastings on August 1st with a spectacular lineup from the new 2012 releases of Zind-Humbrecht. We were delighted to taste these with our customers, many of whom professed to not being too familiar with the great wines of Alsace before they came, but who nevertheless left with a new name to add to their wishlist. After the fantastic recent tasting held by Olivier Humbrecht in our London offices, it was a privilege to be able to show these brilliant new releases so soon to our customers in Hong Kong as well.
Our Friday Tastings are now a regular feature in our Hong Kong office – if you are interested in attending or have any questions for our team in HK please email our Head of Asia Pacific Ross Eva or call: +852 2832 9986
