Chateau Palmer 2017 – First Major En Primeur Release

Chateau Palmer was the highest rated wine from the Margaux appellation in James Suckling’s round-up of Bordeaux 2017s and was highlighted as possibly one of the wines of the vintage. Scoring the same as Chateau Margaux, Suckling describes 2017 Palmer as  “sexy and well-formed… with very velvety and suave tannins… full-bodied, soft and round. Extremely long and last for minutes”. Scoring the wine a fantastic 97-98 points!

Chateau Palmer was also a top pick for Margaux from the F+R team. The Palmer style epitomises finesse and elegance, completely in keeping with the 2017 vintage overall. With the wide majority of their vineyards completely unaffected by the April frosts due to their gravel plateau site, the winery was able to make a premium wine without compromise.

Chateau Palmer remains true to its style, producing a beautifully elegant wine with both fine plush fruit and a firmness to its structure giving good ageing potential. The wine has a lovely floral lift with a great mid palate, raspberry, blueberry fruits with delicate nuances of sweet spices and perfumed aromas sitting above the fruit on a long harmonious finish. The length is really impressive!

The price is also looking good too – the Chateau is offering the wine at 20% lower than their 2016 and with only a point difference in the score, this is a great buy!

Neighbouring the mighty 1st Growth Chateau Margaux, Chateau Palmer has been producing consistently brilliant wines that outperform 2nd and even 1st Growths for decades. As Neal Martin highlights below, it is one of the most famous and sought after of all Bordeaux wineries: “Château Palmer has its own loyal army of supporters, many of whom would proclaim this estate reflects the attributes and character of Margaux wine more than any other: the femininity and finesse, those cashmere tannins that caress the palate, that complexity that develops with bottle-age. Few would argue that its status as a Third Growth does complete injustice to Palmer’s wines over the last four decades, particularly since its immortal 1961 vintage practically invented the term ‘Super-Second'”.

A fantastic way to kick of 2017 EP campaign, and a firm F+R favourite, please let us know if you would like any…
