After our wonderful masterclass with Olivier Humbrecht of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, we whisked him away, along with a few of our customers, to Hunan – one of London’s leading Chinese restaurants.
Olivier planned another brilliant tasting for us – a Heimbourg vertical – designed to showcase the particularities of this single vineyard. With a particular focus on the Heimbourg Gewurztraminer, the tasting perfectly demonstrated Olivier’s mastery of this variety, bringing energy and freshness to what can be a heavy wine with low acidity. What was also notable was the intensity of the primary aromatics as the wines got older. It is no secret that Zind-Humbrecht’s wines can be quite backwards at first, but this really highlighted the reward one receives on ageing these wines.
Along with seemingly never-ending dishes of wonderful Chinese food, we tasted the following from Heimbourg, all of which matched the spicy dishes with ease.
“Off dry in style, this was very clean and fresh on the nose then firmly mineral on the palate. Very clean and fresh but with enough weight to stand up to the gentle spice of the appetizers.”
“Deeply coloured. Rich nose with ripe tropical fruit notes. A little more sweetness than the Riesling. Weighty and textured on the palate and ripe but not overly so – still very pure.“
“Notably pale in colour. This has citrus fruit and a delicate floral character. Medium bodied and for the moment restrained in style. Very young at the moment but lots of substance here.“
“Deeper in colour. The richness of the vintage comes through on the nose with exotic fruit notes and intense rose petal aromas. High sweetness is balanced by vibrant acidity“
“Deeply coloured. Ripe and quite grapey with exuberant floral character. Weighty and sweet on the palate but retains freshness on the finish.”
“Slightly lighter in body than the 2003, this is a little more developed with tertiary notes of honey and spice alongside rich stone fruit and fragrant rose petal character.”
“Incredibly ripe on the nose with raisiny, almost toffee notes. Rich and viscous on the palate and extremely concentrated. Very impressive indeed.”
“Intense and honeyed on the nose, this was fully sweet with an incredible residual sugar. Superbly integrated with incredible length. Still very young; will keep 15 years +.”
