Germany 2015: S.A. Prüm Riesling Tasting

We recently played host to top Riesling producer S.A. Prüm, who visited our London office to take us through a brilliant tasting of their wines. From a selection of excellent back-vintages to some of the hotly anticipated 2015s, these are a Riesling lover’s dream…

S.A. Prum Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr

Last week FINE+RARE were delighted to host Raimund Prüm, the man at the helm of well-respected Mosel winery S.A. Prüm (and from the same origins as Riesling icon J.J.Prum) to taste through a range of their very best wines. On the tasting table was a selection of back vintages alongside the keenly awaited 2015s – wines from a vintage that some are calling the best in living memory.

About S.A. Prüm

Prüm is one of the most famous names in German wine. The Prüm family had been making wine in the Mosel for centuries when their organisation split into two branches in the early 20th century, creating J.J. Prüm and S.A. Prüm. While J.J. Prüm get most of the international attention owing to their focus on exports, relatives S.A. Prüm are just as good, producing beautifully-crafted Rieslings that age for decades.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr: An Iconic Vineyard

With an average of 80 years of age, S.A. Prüm’s vines represent one of the oldest and best portions of iconic Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. They are planted exclusively to Riesling and enjoy prime position on Mosel’s steep slopes, where the perfect combination of sunlight and rain helps produce premium grapes. This level of quality is then enhanced by a rigorous approach to quality control, with all grapes having to pass three separate stages of sorting and removal before making it to the press – on the vine, on sorting tables in the vineyard and on arrival at the winery.

The result is a range of gloriously refined, seductive world-class Rieslings that delight the drinker.

S.A. Prüm’s Rieslings

We were recently treated to a visit from Raimund Prüm himself to taste through a selection of the back-vintages as well as the hotly-anticipated 2015s. The hype surrounding this vintage has been intense, with many producers calling it the best they have ever had. Raimund is in agreement, commenting that:

“2015 is a real Riesling vintage. This vintage shows a perfect acidity level and so greatly integrated that it is most enjoyable to taste now and/or  lay down these wines for many years to enjoy at perfection. The ageing potential is incredibly long which gives plenty of time to select this vintage for a very nice and impressive tasting 15 – 25 years from now. 2015 to me is comparable with 1985 or even 1995 and 2005 also perfect examples for impressive quality in Riesling.

True to form, Prüm’s wines did not disappoint. The 2015s were spectacular, already showing beautiful balance and flair, while the back vintages, spanning from 2004 to 2012, demonstrated great concentration and power.
