The Story of the Walled Plot

In 1971 Rémi and Henri Krug bought fifteen plots in Mesnil-sur-Oger covering an area of just six hectares. They did so over the telephone without even seeing the land, such is the quality of the Chardonnay produced in this village. When they visited their new purchase they found it included a tiny walled vineyard of less than two hectares in the heart of the village, complete with an inscription carved in the wall pertaining to its creation in 1698. From this enclosed plot Krug’s Clos du Mesnil was born.

As the metal hoops in Krug’s photo above may allude, their wines are fermented in well-aged small oak barrels to enhance the rich aromatics. Clos du Mesnil is no exception, and in Olivier Krug’s words, this wine is: “the continuation of Joseph Krug’s nonconformist spirit. It illustrates the House’s obsessive attention to detail as the in-depth knowledge of each plot as an individual wine allows for the undisputed quality envisioned by the founder.”

Having said that, it is worth noting that Krug are Champagne’s master blenders. The fact, therefore, that they do not blend the pure Chardonnay grapes from the walled vineyard of Clos du Mesnil demonstrates just how high the quality is. Whether owing to the protection offered by the walls, the central location within what is one of the most renowned villages in Champagne, the south-eastern orientation of the vines or a combination of all three, there is no denying that the grapes from Clos du Mesnil are very special. And due to the minuscule proportions of the vineyard the Champagne produced there is a rare gem…

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002

The release of the first Krug vintage of  the millennium is a monumental moment. Although the 2003 has already been released to huge critical acclaim, the 2002 vintage, including Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002, has been held back for longer due to its immense ageing potential.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 has spent an astonishing thirteen years in the cellars and only 13,278 individually numbered bottles have been produced. To put that into perspective, when Mesnil-sur-Oger’s other big player Salon declares a vintage, it creates around 60,000 bottles – itself a miniscule quantity compared to the production of titans Dom Perignon or Louis Roederer Cristal.

2002 Vintage

Any Krug hailing from this outstanding vintage is sure to pique the interest of Champagne aficionados. Jancis Robinson describes the 2002 vintage as: “A magnificent vintage for Champagne with near-perfect growing conditions, capped by fine dry weather at harvest. Ageworthy wines with plush fruit held in check by keen acidity.” In his vintage chart for Champagne, Robert Parker has only rated the 1996 vintage higher and Wine Advocate say: “2002 was an outstanding vintage, most likely the best of the decade.”

Eric Lebel, House of Krug’s cellar master, describes the vintage as follows: “The year 2002 was a very special one. It was clement and generous, uniformly warm, with few climatic variations.” Champagne releases from this vintage have been fiercely contested, one as special and as rare as Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 is likely to disappear in a blink.

Tasting Note

House of Krug recommend serving this Champagne in a white Burgundy glass to reveal its full potential and describe it as follows:

“Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 is an astonishing Champagne with aromas of fresh white and citrus fruits, fresh mint, eucalyptus, acacia, white pepper, spices, slightly grilled nuts and brioche. On the palate, it is precise, pure and fresh with tension, vivacity and great balance. Notes of peach, orange, citrus and liquorice can also be found in this singular Champagne with a very long finish.”

Consistency with Critics

Although, at time of writing, critics are yet to release scores or tasting notes for the Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002, both of the last two vintages of Krug Clos du Mesnil – the 2003 and the 2000 – have received 18.5 points from Jancis Robinson. And she is not alone in her praise for this Champagne. Antonio Galloni has previously said about Clos du Mesnil that “It never fails to leave me speechless” and you only have to look back at the scores from the previous ten releases to see how consistently highly rated this wine is with the critics…
