Last Friday James Suckling, in association with Hong Kong Tatler, hosted the fifth ‘Great Wines of the World‘ tasting at the Four Season’s Hotel, Hong Kong. The event featured wines from 11 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and US from 48 top producers including: Penfolds, Almaviva, Billecart-Salmon, Chateau Latour, Chateau Montrose, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Pichon Baron, Bruno Giacosa, Roberto Voerzio, Tenuta San Guido, Tua Rita, Numanthia and Peter Michael Winery.
Unsurprisingly it took me around 2 hours to taste through 100 or so wines, however, there were a handful that really deserve a special mention. The following stood-out from the crowd:
Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano 2011
Easily my favourite wine of the day. Surprisingly ready to drink with a very charming strawberry, floral scented nose. Full bodied with fine tannins and very long length.
Roberto Voerzio Barolo Fossati Case Nere 10 Anni Riserva 2004
Aged for 10 years in the cellar before release, this 2004 is ready to drink now with fantastic depth and complexity, full body, good structure and length…. A close second to the Giacosa!
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2010
This is one of the 100-pointers from this great Bordeaux vintage. Still a baby but already showing massive potential – full-bodied with an incredible aroma and very long length.
Les Forts de Latour 2008
A classical Bordeaux. Elegant fruit with powerful, but not overwhelming, density. Ready to drink after decanted for around an hour.
Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura 2004
Charming with sweet fruit and chewy tannins, ready to drink now but will improve after 4-5 years in the cellar.
Tasted surprisingly like a ‘classic’ Bordeaux! Aromas of spice and cigar box with sweet, yet subtle fruit with a hint of minerality on the palate. Brilliant potential, needs around 5 years before it’s ready to drink.
What a tasting! And more to come with the Hong Kong International Wine Fair taking place on the 6th to the 8th November. Cheers!
