A tip from a top industry insider led us to the late-released wines of Domaine Potinet-Ampeau…
A special Burgundy tasting: Domaine Potinet-Ampeau.
Last week the team at FINE+RARE had the pleasure of sampling a flight of Burgundies from Domaine Potinet-Ampeau. It was a great tasting, not the usual range of young wines from the latest vintage as is the norm, these were cellar-aged, released only from the domain’s cellars when starting to shine and are spectacular to drink now as a result.
An inside tip from a Burgundy great.
The recommendation came to us through an industry insider who works closely with Sebastian Cathiard. When recently tasting with Cathiard, our source was told that the wines from “off-the-radar” Potinet-Ampeau are stunning, and to be sure to taste both the new and older vintages. The tip proved to be precise – of the five wines we tasted, all were truly impressive.
Late-releases from Potinet-Ampeau’s deep cellars.
Situated in Monthelie, Potinet-Ampeau is one of few domains that do not participate in the en primeur zeitgeist. Instead, like Domaine Leroy, they make wines to be kept in their cellars until they are deemed ready for drinking.
These pristine cellars are usually large for Burgundy and mean they can house back vintages of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Volnay, Pommard and Monthelie, including several Premier Cru wines. The 21.5 acres of vineyards (with an average 30 years for most vines) are tended mainly by hand. Vinification takes place at the winery in Monthelie before the wines are matured for a full two years in barrel with minimal amounts of new oak.
The wines showed incredibly well and given the degree of maturity combined with impeccable provenance, there are very few wines in Burgundy that can compete in sheer value.
Here are the wines we tasted and recommend:
Bright and focused nose of pure lemon, honey, acacia and vanilla. Crisp and zesty on the palate with perfect tension and flavours of beeswax, citrus zest, baked apple and saline. (May 2016)
91 points F+R
Development on the nose shows bruised apple, honeyed orchard fruit, mushroom and earth. The palate is textural and mouth-filling with ripe stone fruit, butterscotch, honey-lemon and a long line of salinity. Drinking beautifully now – what a treat. (May 2016)
94 points F+R
From 70 year old vines. Spectacular nose! Aromas of baked lemon, beeswax, ripe peaches, toffee and white flowers. The palate is equally intense with perfect balance of plump weight with fresh, energetic acidity. Yellow fruits, peaches and juicy apples are fused with caramel and roasted nuts. Long and concentrated right into the finish. Dazzling – drink now! (May 2016)
96 points F+R
Layers of black tea, saddle leather and stewed plums on the nose. The palate is round and creamy with silky tannins on a medium bodied frame. Flavours of savoury spice, wild strawberry, cherry, black tea and a streak of irony-minerals form a long finish. Drinking-well now. (May 2016)
91 points F+R
From a great Volnay Vintage. Aromas of forest floor, black currant and soy. The palate shows lovely energy with super-acidity and a fleshy fruit in the mid-palate. Fine-grained tannins are fused with layers of black tea, plum, rosemary, black cherries and mossy, spicy earth. Exquisite length and vibrancy. Drink now or hold 2-4 years. (May 2016)
