It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that GPL is an F+R pick. This has to be one of Pauillac’s most reliable properties, turning out quite excellent wine year after year. Moreover, GPL is always fairly priced and nearly always offers exceptional value for money. Xavier Borie has been making exceptional wines here since 1978, and has retained a real “Pauillac” style. Moreover, he has kept his feet firmly on the ground in terms of pricing. This is a wine that one can buy year in-year out with the confidence that it will pay dividends.
2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is as complete and fresh as we could have wished for. The two other wines in the stable, Lacoste-Borie and Haut-Batailley, were equally impressive and made a perfect build up to the main attraction, a wine that is pure Pauillac and classic in the very best sense. Experience proves that Grand-Puy-Lacoste repays time in the cellar, and blind tastings it regularly matches and outscores wines with a much heftier price tag. In short, this is a Pauillac that should be on everyone’s shopping list.
“Cool and a touch closed on the nose though there is clear quality here. Lots and lots going on in the mouth. Blackcurrant fruit with a hint of mocha. Perfectly ripe though no “gout de solaire”, more a “gout de Pauillac”. Weight, fruit, density, class, balance, Depth. This is very, very good. 93-95.” Joss Fowler, FINE+RARE
