Mention the name Denis Durantou and the word that will most often come up is “genius”.  A tasting at his flagship property Eglise-Clinet is always a treat: not only are all of Denis’ wines of remarkable quality, one always feels that one is learning something, even if only through being in his presence.

Denis is famed for both Eglise-Clinet and for his range of “value” wines: La Chenade, Les Cruzelles, Saintayme and Montlandrie.  La Petite Eglise sits somewhere between these and Eglise Clinet itself.

Petite Eglise has a tiny production of just under 600 cases and in 2014 does exactly what a second wine should: there is a glimpse of the grand vin here (which will almost certainly come in at four times the price at least), some true Pomerol character and that hand-crafted touch that Denis achieves in all of his wines.  Indeed any one of Denis’ wines makes the cut for recommendation, and Eglise-Clinet, not for the first time, is one of our highest-scoring wines of the vintage.  Bravo.

There is depth here, with dark fruit and mocha on the nose. Some class. And in the mouth this is excellent: very Pomerol. Lifted fruit. Very, very good.  91-93+.Joss Fowler, FINE+RARE
